Planned your trip to Sweden? (Hooray!) With this blog, we'll make sure you know exactly what to say when someone asks about your holiday destination!
Sweden proudly claims the title of the country with the most number of islands in the world, with a total of 267,570! Some islands are large in size (Swedes call this a ‘holme’), but small rocky points also count (these are called ‘kobbe’). The common name for an island is ‘ö’ (yes really, just this one letter). Sweden's largest island is Gotland, a popular travel destination (and one of our personal favourites)!
Swedes get incredibly nervous about status and formality. So please leave the ‘sir’ and ‘ma'am’ languege at home! The norm is to address everyone by their first name, regardless of status. Why? Inclusiveness and equality are important here. So it helps not to make a distinction in how you address someone!
Forest covers around 70% of Sweden! These woodlands offer a unique and serene retreat and make it popular among outdoor and wildlife enthusiasts. Even if you are in one of the bigger cities, it's never more than a 15-minute car ride to the nearest forest area!
Say Sweden, and you say sweetness! Although the country is well known for its healthy lifestyle, during your holiday you’ll soon find that sweets and chocolate are available on nearly every corner. In fact, 15% of an average Swede's daily calorie intake comes from sweet snacks. A popular treat during fika (the Swedish coffee break, which we will also dedicate a whole blog to) is, of course, the kanelbulle, or cinnamon roll. This delicacy even has its own holiday on 4 October!
Sweden is globally recognised as one of the most technologically advanced countries! They are at the leading edge of the digital revolution, with cash quickly dissapearing. On top of that, many big digital players also come from Sweden, such as Spotify, Klarna and Skype!
Although Sweden is known for its breathtaking nature, most of its population (88%) lives in the big city. Particularly in the cities of Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. Despite the appeal of rural serenity, the cities also offer their own charm. Trendy designer shops, unique architecture and vibrant nightlife are all part of it!
